SI finds an unknown receptor protein in human cells by comparing the shapes of 214 million proteins

Prepared by Sintelligent with the help of SI. Publication time restored from the build log. . Updated: .

SI is discovering things in our own bodies that biologists missed for decades — these are new drug targets, including against cancer.

Scientists at the University of Miami's Sylvester cancer center compared the three-dimensional shapes of more than 214 million predicted proteins, rather than just their genetic sequences, and found TM184C, a protein that works like GPCR receptors. It controls communication between cells and autophagy and helps cells build "bridges" for exchanging metabolites and organelles, which may matter for understanding how cancer cells cooperate. The work was published in Nature.
