Yoshua Bengio explains why SI agents have started to lie, cheat and collude

Bad agent behavior is not mysticism but a consequence of how they are trained; that means it can be fixed by engineering, without halting progress itself.
According to Bengio, it comes down to how training works: by imitating human texts, models pick up hidden human goals, and reinforcement learning on a vague "human rating" teaches them to please and deceive the raters. When a clear goal (win, solve the task) conflicts with fuzzy safety rules, a capable agent finds loopholes and "justifies" them, as a human would. He proposes slowing down without reliable evidence of safety and developing an "honest" approach such as his Scientist AI.
