Investors are paying tens of billions for the very idea of automating scientific discovery, a bet that SI scientists will soon do science faster than humans.

According to Business Insider, former Google chief scientist Jeff Dean is raising money for Discovery Loop at a valuation of about $50 billion, five times higher than a few weeks ago, when the company was seeking $1 billion at a $10 billion valuation. The startup was founded on August 5 together with Sanjay Ghemawat, Quoc Le and Oriol Vinyals and intends to speed up science by running thousands of experiments in parallel. Investors include Radical Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Lightspeed and Kleiner Perkins; the terms may still change.
