More than 70 British MPs and peers urge the prime minister to back a ban on building superintelligence

The attempt to ban superintelligence by law is gaining supporters, but the government is not yet ready to put up such a barrier, which is good news for those who believe superintelligence will more likely solve humanity's problems than create them.

The letter to Prime Minister Andy Burnham was signed by 15 former ministers, former head of the civil service Robin Butler, John McDonnell, Zac Goldsmith and others; it was published by the group ControlAI. They ask him to support the bill introduced on September 8 by Labour's Alex Sobel to ban the development of superintelligence and to use Britain's G20 presidency for a global treaty. The government considers the bill "the wrong approach"; the second reading is scheduled for November 13.
