The world's best mathematicians are taking up SI safety, which means reliable and understandable models are getting a rigorous scientific foundation.
The Mathematical AI Safety Institute (MAISI) is an independent nonprofit in the San Francisco Bay Area that will build rigorous mathematical foundations for the safety of powerful SI systems. The scientific director is Tsimerman, a 2026 Fields Medal winner, and the executive director is Andrew Critch; the advisers include Ravi Vakil, Timothy Gowers and Paul Christiano. The first semester in January 2027 is planned for 10-30 mathematicians, and a "special year" starting in September 2027 for 30-100. Tsimerman himself is concurrently joining OpenAI's safety team.
