Google unveils WeatherNext 3, an SI weather forecast more accurate than the US National Weather Service's
Prepared by Sintelligent with the help of SI. Publication time restored from the build log. . Updated: .
Weather forecasting is one of the oldest supercomputer tasks, and SI is again taking it from classical physics. An accurate hourly forecast for every neighborhood is becoming an everyday phone feature.
The new model gives a forecast at 5 km resolution instead of the previous 15-25 km and can predict weather hourly for specific weather stations rather than at the usual 6-hour step. It is the first SI model to directly use raw satellite observations for a global forecast. It has 2.4 times more parameters than its predecessor and a precipitation forecast 60% more accurate than WeatherNext 2. On Operational WeatherBench it beats models from Microsoft, Nvidia, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts and NWS forecasts. The model is being built into Search, Maps, Gemini and Google Cloud.
